“Thought you were going to leave the lady alone?” Hudson stayed behind after the meeting had ended in order to grill his best friend.

“That was the plan,” Kairon was reclined in one of the chairs near the head of the long table. “Then she was here and...” he shrugged, allowing assumption to take hold.

“This still about proving she’s not what she says she is or about you just wanting to be with her again?”

“Hold off on mentioning that to Jocasta just yet, alright?” Kairon had shared his suspicions with Hudson about what the supposed madams really did for a living. “I’m not sure what Beck’s trying to do here and it may not go over well with Jocasta if you try snooping into that right now.”

Hudson was already nodding. “I got it. Eager to know if you’re right, but I’ll keep my mouth shut...for a while.”

Kairon uttered a pained sound then and rested his forehead on the table. “How’d I get into this?”

Hudson offered a sympathetic smile. “It’s what happens when a man is lucky enough to meet a woman as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.”

“Which is why we need to know who we took to her house.”

“And you don’t buy that they were just a couple of pricks out to cause grief?”

“I don’t buy that any more than you do,” Kairon slouched back in the chair then. “We can’t overlook what they said to that girl.”

“Or what it might mean for who we’re involved with now,” Hudson took the chair across from Kairon at the table. “How much do you think Schaefer knew?”

Kairon threw out a wave. “Doubtful he knew any of it and probably means to keep it that way. What happened at Surreal had nothing to do with the deal he wants us in on. Spencer and Cafrey have another agenda entirely. One that falls well outside the lines of Schaefer’s hoped-for deal with us.”

“You’re sure of that?” Hudson followed the robotic tapping of his fingers along the tabletop instead of meeting Kairon’s gaze.

“Nothing’s one hundred percent, but I’m willing to give Schaefer the benefit of the doubt here.”

“And Spencer and Cafrey?” Hudson probed.

Kairon moved his chair to and fro, then sighed. “Everyone knows we’ve gone straight and how successful we’ve been at it. Spencer, Cafrey and whoever it is they work for may not be interested in the straight part, but the successful part...”

“What do you need Kai?”

“To know who it is they work for. Try to find out quietly. We don’t need them running scared or running back to Surreal in retaliation. Beck and her people are going to be edgy enough until we get to the bottom of this.”

“I assume we’re bringing in Mat, Han and Bish on this.”

Kairon nodded, stood. “The four of you should plan a strategy. I’m gone for the day.”

“Should I guess?”

Kairon fixed his oldest friend with a look of mock offence. “Always thinking so little of me.”

“Don’t worry,” Hudson grinned. “I always will.” Some of his glee sobered.
